Harleendeep, a second-year MBBS student at Dr. S.S. Tantia Medical College Hospital and Research Center, has been selected for a project by Singapore Fertility and IVF Consultancy Private Limited.

Deputy Director (Medical College) Gurbhajan Singh said that her selection was made under the guidance of Dr. Sahil Thakral from the Department of Forensic Medicine. In a letter sent to Harleendeep, Institute Director Dr. Alexis Heng Boon Chin stated that the aim of the project is to write and publish an academic journal on developing a regulatory framework for in vitro gametogenesis technology in India.

The research will focus on generating eggs and sperm in the laboratory from reprogrammed adult somatic cells. So far, this technique has been proven effective in mice. It will now also be applied to human models and is expected to be useful in the field of clinical assisted reproduction.
